Exclusive! Here’s why Ranveer Singh-starrer ’83 has been scheduled for a June release - Times of India

Ranveer Singh is all set to entertain fans as Kapil Dev in ’83, a film that chronicles Team India’s prestigious Cricket World Cup win in 1983. The film was to hit the screens in April 2020 but the pandemic pushed the release date ahead by more than a year. The makers of ’83 recently announced that the film will now hit theatres only on June 4.

Interestingly, despite ’83’s scale and scope, makers didn’t opt for a festive release. Revealing the real reason behind picking the date, Shibasish Sarkar, CEO of Reliance Entertainment, shares, “It was on June 25, 1983, that India won the World Cup. We will start the film on June 4 and expect it will do justice in terms of paying a tribute to the real heroes of 1983!” So, with ’83’s release on June 4, the makers are hoping that it will be a blockbuster by June 25 such that the success of the movie coincides with India’s victory in ’83.

Directed by Kabir Khan, ’83 features an ensemble cast of Tahir Raj Bhasin, Saqib Saleem, Harrdy Sandhu, Ammy Virk, Jiiva, Pankaj Tripathi, Boman Irani, Nishant Dahiya, Sahil Khattar, and Amrita Puri. The film will also star Deepika Padukone as Ranveer’s onscreen wife. Incidentally, ’83 will be Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone’s first onscreen outing after their wedding in 2018.
